Dolby Vision: The world of video formats is constantly evolving, with new technologies emerging all the time. In recent years, several new video formats have been introduced that offer improved image quality and more efficient compression. For instance, new video formats like HEVC( High Efficiency Video Coding), also known as H.265, is offering improved compression efficiency than H.264. It is widely used for streaming 4K and 8K video content.

It is one of those formats that is generating quite a stir, especially in the mobile world. So, what exactly is Dolby Vision? How does it work? Why is it becoming popular? Let’s get into more details.

Dolby VisionDolby Vision: What is it?

Dolby Vision is a video format with a high dynamic range (HDR) developed by Dolby Laboratories. It improves video image quality by giving a wider colour gamut, greater contrast ratio, and brighter highlights. It is intended to provide viewers with a more immersive watching experience.

The feature is being offered in high-end TVs and streaming devices. It is also becoming available in some tablets and mobile devices. Dolby Vision tablets provide a high-quality viewing experience with better colour accuracy, contrast, and brightness. Some popular tablets that support Dolby Vision include the iPad Pro, Galaxy Tab S7, and Lenovo Tab P11 Pro. While Dolby Vision is still in its early stages on mobile devices, it is becoming increasingly common in high-end smartphones. The iPhone 12, Samsung Galaxy S21, and Google Pixel 5 are among the prominent mobile devices that support it.

How does it work?

Dolby vision works through a series of procedures to make the content more immersive and life like. Those procedures include:

Color Grading:

Dolby Vision content is created using a process called color grading. The technique of changing the colours and brightness levels in a video to achieve a specific aesthetic or mood is known as colour grading. Color grading in Dolby Vision is done with a 12-bit colour depth, which implies there are 68 billion potential colours. In other words, the process enables for more subtle and accurate colour representation.

Increased Contrast Ratios

It also offers a greater contrast ratio in addition to a larger colour range. The difference between the brightest and darkest regions of an image is referred to as the contrast ratio. The contrast ratio in standard video formats is restricted by the display’s capabilities. Dolby Vision, on the other hand, supports a higher contrast ratio, resulting in better information in both bright and dark portions of the image.

Dynamic Metadata

In addition, one of the key features of Dolby Vision is its use of dynamic metadata. Metadata is information encoded in the video signal that instructs the display on how to display the content. The metadata in Dolby Vision is dynamic, which means it can be modified on a frame-by-frame basis. In other words, it allows the content to be tailored for each scene, delivering the highest possible image quality for the viewer.

Brighter Highlights

Dolby Vision also has the ability to show off brighter highlights. There is often a loss of detail in scenes with particularly bright highlights when using conventional video formats. On the other hand, it can display highlights that are up to 10,000 nits bright, making them much more visible than they would be on a standard screen. With this setting, you can see more of the finer details in the brighter parts of the image, creating a more lifelike and engaging scene.

How to get it?

Viewers need a Dolby Vision-enabled device to experience the format’s benefits. It is supported by many modern televisions and streaming devices. A Dolby Vision logo or mention of the format in the device’s specifications are good ways to tell if your device is Dolby Vision-compatible. In addition to being compatible with devices, Dolby Vision content is also widely available. The content can be found on many popular streaming services, including Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and Disney+. Dolby Vision is also widely available for Blu-ray and digital movie purchases.
