Qualcomm vs MediaTek: Who’s Got The Best Processor?

Mobile Phone Buying Tips From Curious Steve

Snapdragon and Helio, these are some terms that you go through when you are planning to buy a new phone. Not everyone born as a geek. So, Let’s just start with the basics and then we can move on to the process of picking up the best. For starters, these are some renown processors that are exclusively made for mobile phones. While Snapdragon was made by Qualcomm Technologies residing in the USA, Helio belongs to MediaTek.

These brands play a major role in powering up the mobile platform. When it comes to being competitive, these companies go toe to toe. Apart from Huawei and Samsung that holds in-house processor manufacturing abilities, every mobile phone brand uses either Snapdragon or Helio to power up their devices. Moreover, Kirin from Huawei and Exynos from Samsung are way behind when compared to Helio or Snapdragon. Nonetheless, they are still powering some significant amount of devices which deserves an honourable mention. However, both Snapdragon & Helio are battling it out to make their mark as title favourites.

Choosing One Is Tough:

Choosing between these two is really tough as both of them spouts their own advantages and disadvantages. While MediaTek mostly concentrates on powering up the budget segment. Snapdragon, on the other hand, concentrates on both Flagships and mid-range smartphones. Both of them have their own tactics and strategies in order to make the cut. When it comes to performance, these two are mano a mano and that makes the choice tough for the consumers.

Why Snapdragon?

Although they both aced at giving an equal performance. Snapdragon owes some trump cards in its arsenal that really turns the table. I compiled a list of those things that give Qualcomm Snapdragon an edge over its rival MediaTek Helio.

1. GPU: The Unmatched Arsenal

Qualcomm Snapdragon has successfully captured the market and dubbed as every gamer’s pick for hardcore gaming, thanks to its unbeatable GPU called Adreno– An anagram of AMD’s graphics-brand Radeon. From the moment they united their forces, they’ve been crushing their competition. Android games on Snapdragon runs buttery smooth. With super-smooth motion (up to 144 frames per second) and HDR (High Dynamic Range) rendering, Snapdragon knocked over every one of its competition.

On the other hand, MediaTek is still struggling to put MALI on the map. It has produced their brand of GPU’s “mali” with the intent of contending with Adreno. However, user reviews and opinion have clearly proven them to be inferior to Qualcomm’s Snapdragon.

2. Developer’s Freedom: Scope For Custom ROMS

If you ask a tech geek about why they love Snapdragon? They most probably will tell you how well those Snapdragon equipped phones helped them to switch from different operating systems without any bustle. That’s because Snapdragon releases its source code regularly. You can check the code aurora forum to see it. By doing that, it is supporting and attracting various developers to work on it. That’s how the phones equipped with Snapdragon are getting more custom ROMS and kernels than any other chipsets.

3. Transparency: Qualcomm’s Success Tactic.

Do you know that Qualcomm was able to release the source code of its Snapdragon 845 chipset in just 6 weeks from its release? On the other hand, MediaTek is still unable to release any of its source code. Being transparent can benefit the company itself. It has many benefits.

Knowing all this, MediaTek is still not considering the idea of being transparent. It’s like, Something is really fishy going inside and releasing its source code might make them dig their own grave. Nonetheless, It will raise many suspicions like these, if it is still planning to cover its traces instead of being transparent.

Final Thoughts :

MediTek almost covered everything that Qualcomm is offering- Performance, AI capabilities, Value for money. But, it is missing one big factor- Reliability. At the same time, Qualcomm’s extends that in a silver platter to its customers.

If you are willing to forfeit your privacy for some extra bucks, MediaTek will never disappoint you. If not, then choose Qualcomm Snapdragon, it will never stop astonishing you.
